Being a teenager can be a challenging time of life! Teenage bodies are undergoing major changes - some of these changes are easy to see, such as size and shape. However there are a lot of changes happening inside a teenage body as well, including inside the teenage brain. Add to this the fast pace, use of technology and pressures of our modern world and there's a lot to deal with... and this is where yoga comes in.
Yoga provides calm, grounding and balance. A regular yoga practice for teenagers allows them to focus and concentrate better, gives them tools and strategies for managing stress and anxiety, promotes better sleep, helps to regulate moods and deal with difficult emotions. Along with this it helps a growing body adjust with the problem of varying rates of bone and muscle growth, increases flexibility and coordination, promotes better posture, improving strength and increasing fitness.
What to expect at Teen Yoga...
At KinKou Yoga's after school teen class it's all about creating a safe, nurturing and comfortable space for teens to learn how to truly look after themselves. Students are welcome to arrive up to 15 minutes early to class where there's often a warm pot of herbal tea or a cool jug of lemon water waiting to refresh them after school along with a selection of motivating and inspiring books to flick through, mandalas to colour or journals to write in. Softly scented incense and gently glowing candles add to the ambiance of self-care and nurture. Kathy's eclectic music playlist (which is always open for suggestions from students) includes acoustic or instrumental versions of popular tunes, traditional "yogi" music along with other uplifting music both modern and classic.
Starting class with a body scan and "check in", we move on to a gentle warm up progressing to a standing sequence of movement with breath. We then move on to the class theme which can vary from standing postures, to balance, to partner or group work to inversions and more! Students are encouraged to challenge themselves physically and mentally - to either take advanced options, or to step back and take it slower, or to rest. Each class ends with Savasana (yoga relaxation), which includes an optional temple massage - this is clearly a favourite part of class, with teens leaving class feeling truly relaxed and calm.
